Steel has a consistent density of approximately 490 pounds per cubic foot (7,850 kg/m³), making it one of the densest common construction materials — roughly three times heavier than concrete and nearly three times heavier than granite.

    For flat steel plates and sheets, calculate the volume by multiplying length × width × thickness (all in the same units), then multiply by the density. For structural shapes like I-beams, channels, and angles, it is more practical to use the published weight-per-linear-foot values found in steel reference tables, since these shapes have complex cross-sections that make volume calculation tedious.
